Portrait Photographer? Could I be the one you are looking for?

It can be tough to choose a portrait photographer for you or your family.  First thing….have you checked out my galleries yet?

4 Things to Consider When Hiring a Portrait Photographer

You feel overwhelmed and don’t even know how to start. You don’t even know what you don’t know!!

What are you even supposed to type into Google?  Portrait Photographer?  Palms sweating…you click the enter button…. afraid…. unsure…. what are you even THINKING? Sounds familiar?  Nah.  I know.  Too dramatic.

More likely, you keep postponing that photo shoot you want or need.  Don’t have the time, don’t know a good portrait photographer, not sure why you even need photos. There is always another time you can pull that together, right?

And then it happens.  You realize it is time to finally hire a portrait photographer.

But now that you want to hire a portrait photographer you have NO IDEA HOW TO START.  You are not alone.

Being photographed is an intensely personal experience and can be a major investment.  So what SHOULD you look for?

Am I the right portrait photographer for you?

1)   Do you like my style of photography?

You know, it seems obvious but many people skip galleries and go straight to the price list.  But really, if you aren’t in love with my style then what is the point of hiring me?  Each portrait photographer brings their own interpretation of the world to the table.

Spend some time going through my galleries and my blogs and see if I have done work in the type of photography you are looking for.

portrait_photographerCheck out this blog post about a session I did for a young woman running for a student council position at Western University.  She was a delight to work with!  There were posters of these images plastered all over Western and I am delighted to report that she won!!  The University is lucky to have her.

If you don’t see what you are looking for, we might not be a good fit.  Not to say I am not creative and love to try new things, but really, maybe I am not the one for you, this time.

One of the new things I have tried this year is theatre photography.  Talk about challenging!!  Dark rooms, lighting that constantly changes, constantly moving people…but oh SO MUCH FUN to be a part of.  I have been so lucky to be involved with the local theatre company OKTC (Original Kids Theatre Company) and have taken pictures of several of their shows.  Check out my blog post about the show “Singing In the Rain”. I love the chance to work with extraordinarily talented kids and artistic crew and capture their energy in photos.

Just having professional equipment is not enough to guarantee professional photos. What is the light like? How about the editing?  Do you like my clean style of editing or would you prefer a different style?

I have chosen to provide my clients with a style of editing that is timeless and not a fad that you would tire of, or worse, want to hide in a drawer.

Case in point: remember the selective colouring of a few years back?  The photos in black and white with a pop of colour?  That is a trend that has passed. I don’t provide that kind of service.

2)   Why do you want these pictures?

Again, it might seem obvious, but take a moment to think about why you want these photos taken.

  • Are you trying to preserve an important milestone?
  • Are you trying to connect as a family?
  • Do you need a professional image to show the world your brand?

Once you are clear as to the purpose of the session, you will have an easier time finding the right person to photograph it.

Consider the type of products the portrait photographer is offering.  Many people think that having a CD of the digitals is the way to go, but they often find that that CD just sits collecting dust and quickly becomes forgotten.  If you are looking for memories, then maybe you need to consider a full service photographer that can provide you with professional photographs, canvases, frames and other specialty products. Be honest with yourself on this one!

I provide a fully customizable service for my clients.  I want you to have the highest quality professionally created products for you and your family to enjoy for generations to come.  I offer, professionally mounted prints in a variety of sizes, high quality canvases, albums and a number of other products. I will sit with you to examine the proofs of the session and help guide you though your options and what fits your needs best.

I am one lucky lady!  A couple of years ago, I discovered the work of Peter Hurley, word famous headshot photographer in New York City.  I have been lucky enough to take Headshot Intensive courses with him and have benefited from his mentorship. What does this mean for you?

Well…..let me tell you!  If you are looking for a Headshot, I know the most effective strategies to get you your best and most authentic look.  You will have a professionally captured and edited digital photo for your marketing and social network presence.

3)   Money isn’t everything…or is it?

We all have budgets.  But sometimes the cheapest option isn’t the best option.  In photography, you often get what you pay for.

A professional portrait photographer costs more than a hobbyist.  But what do they have to offer?

They have the equipment, the training, the knowledge as to how to best control and shape the light and a unique artistic vision.

They also have access to professional printers so that all images and products are the very best quality.

Do you really want this kind of investment to sit collecting dust on a CD?

4)   Am I the kind of person you like to work with?

Let’s get real.

Most people don’t even stop to consider if the photographer’s personality is a match for their own style.

However, having your photograph taken is an intensely personal experience and for many people is very uncomfortable.

Like for real. I would rather go to the dentist for a cavity than pose for someone I am uncomfortable with. I keep thinking of that creepy “photographer” from the movies.  You know that dude.

So how do you decide?  First of all, check out my about page.

Do I sound like the type of person you would like to spend some time with?

Do you think I might have the sense of humour to help you quickly be at ease and the professional knowledge and confidence to deliver an outstanding product?

Could I be the person with enough empathy to understand that you actually hate having your photo taken but enough experience and knowledge to get a great shot?

Might I be the right portrait photographer for you?

Then send me an email or phone me and let’s chat.  Then decide if I am the right photographer for you.

Trust your instincts.
