“Infectious Generosity”. It sounded like exactly what I needed.
I’m Anita Watkins, a photographer in London, Ontario, and I am trying a little harder to do “self-care”. I was about to work out and after a long stretch of heart breaking news, badly written audiobooks and less than inspiring social media, I couldn’t bear to look at any more negativity. Maybe this book was the answer?
Chris Anderson is the head of TED Talks. I have been a fan of what he has done for years. This book is an incredible antidote to the negativity that surrounds us.
This is a moment to reimagine how generosity could transform us. It’s a chance to dream about audacious philanthropy focused on the needs of the whole world. About companies with the vision to get on the right side of history. About a global uprising of ordinary citizens determined to reclaim the Internet and make it a force for good in our world. Are we ready to get excited about the future once again? It’s time! And for you personally, this is all about that most elusive, inspiring, and beautiful thing: the quest for meaning. We were born to be connected. So give in any way that you feel able. Give creatively. Give courageously. Give collaboratively. And let the magic of generosity ripple out into the universe.

So how do you build a generosity mindset? It may start with being generous to yourself. Many of us feel choked by a sense that we’re not worthy. In that frame of mind, it’s hard to look outward.

Causes That I Support: Making a Difference One Step at a Time
In the spirit of what Chris Anderson challenges us to do, I want to share some of the organizations that I personally support. As a business owner who works closely with successful business people, I believe it’s important to use our platform and resources to make a positive impact in the world. So, grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and let’s dive into the causes that I support!
1. DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS Providing emergency medical humanitarian care
Doctors Without Borders is an organization that I have admired for decades. Their work is in helping people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare. They are also fearless advocates who use their experience to speak out about the suffering they witness while carrying out our work.
2. UNITED WAY Supporting Local Organizations
The United Way is the largest non-governmental funder of social services in London, Elgin and Middlesex counties. The goal is to create real, lasting change by improving the quality of life in our communities. By working to identify and understand the root causes of social issues, the goal is to bring together researchers, experts and resources and then support the organizations that will have the biggest impact in our community.
3: TEACHER MENTORS ABROAD Empowering Teachers in the Dominican Republic
The best way to lift a country is through education. Education is the key that unlocks countless doors of opportunity. As a former teacher that spent countless hours learning about the most effective strategies in the classroom, the mission of this organization is close to my heart. TMA works closely with Dominican Teachers to provide them with professional development and leadership opportunities. In doing so, TMA’s mission is to raise the level of education in the Dominican Republic. The result is that students are more engaged and higher-level learning is occurring. It is an incredible program.
4: AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL Human rights
This organization has been around for decades. They have tirelessly fought for human rights all over the world. My father was such an admirer of the organization, that when he died, my mother asked that donations be made to Amnesty International in his memory. He was a difficult man to impress so that was a big deal;)
5: HOPE’S EATING DISORDERS AND SUPPORT
In my work as a photographer, I come across so many people that have issues with their body image. I am passionate about how EVERYONE is beautiful/handsome just as they are. When an opportunity came for me to be on the board of Hope’s EDS, I jumped at the chance.
Unfortunately, Hope’s EDS recently closed their doors, but I am grateful for the opportunity to have made an impact on our community and for the incredible relationships I have built over the years.
6: Humane Society London Middlesex Animal Welfare and Protection
Our furry friends bring us joy, companionship, and unconditional love. That’s why I’m a strong advocate for animal welfare and protection. Whether it’s supporting animal shelters, promoting adoption, or raising awareness about animal cruelty, there are countless ways to make a difference in the lives of our four-legged companions. Let’s be their voice and ensure they receive the love and care they deserve. The Humane Society is an organization that I am proud to support.
7. HEART AND STROKE FOUNDATION
My father died of his first heart attack. My husband survived his. I am forever grateful for the difference that the Heart and Stroke Foundation has made in my life.
8. THE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY
We have all been affected by cancer. Their leadership, research and support of cancer patients and their families have made a difference.
As business people, we have the power to make a difference beyond our professional achievements. By supporting causes that align with our values, we can create a ripple effect of positive change in the world. Whether it’s lifting nations through education, providing assistance to people in across the world or locally, or protecting animals, every step we take counts. So let’s join hands and make a lasting impact together!
Remember, it’s not about how much you give but rather the intention behind it. Find causes that resonate with your heart and lend your support in whatever way you can. Together, we can build a better tomorrow for ourselves and future generations.
Signing off with passion,
Anita (a passionate photographer in London, Ontario)
The Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh taught that attention is the most precious gift we can give someone. Certainly, all generosity starts right there—a willingness to stop focusing on ourselves and pay attention to someone else and their needs.
